A Gorkha legacy
from the Himalayas
Pravesh and Aarty Gurung's link to the Himalayan clan is inherited from their forefathers of Gorkha origin who lived in the Himalayas until a few centuries ago. Their native hometown of Uttarakhand lies in the North of India, where the outer Himalayan ranges stretch through the Siwalik hills.
This is not background — it is identity. The mountains shaped who they are, what they cook, and how they welcome every guest who walks through their door.
The Journey
65 countries. One vision.
Pravesh and Aarty travelled to over 65 countries during their professional and personal journeys, gathering cultural competence and learning how food brings people together everywhere in the world.
Their vivid interactions with people from different walks of life inspired their core ethos: connecting cultures through food. Yet through every country and every cuisine, they always returned to the flavours of home.
"The Himalayas is not confined to any specific race, ethnicity, or country. It's majestic — it bears the nuances of heartful traditions, arts, culture, dance and folklore."
— Pravesh Gurung, Co-FounderThe Arrival
The Himalayas
come to Stockholm.
In 2024, Aama Himalayan Kitchen opened at Fridhemsgatan 15. Not a fusion concept — not a compromise. The real, authentic, deeply nourishing food of the central Himalayas, cooked with tradition and served with the warmth of a mother's kitchen.
We bring together ingredients from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Uttarakhand, and local Swedish farms — connecting the mountains of Asia with the open, curious spirit of Stockholm.
The People Behind Aama
Meet our founders
Pravesh and Aarty Gurung brought Aama to life after years of living and working across the globe. Their Gorkha heritage — rooted in the Himalayan tradition of hospitality — drives everything about how Aama is run.
Having explored the cuisines of 65+ countries, they returned to their roots with one mission: to share the authentic, nourishing, and deeply personal food of the central Himalayas with the world — starting in Stockholm.
"Food is not fuel. It is memory, love, and identity — all on one plate."
